What’s in a name?

While looking at the last meeting minutes from the Eclipse Planning Council, I came across an interesting entry:

Future Simultaneous Releases

We chose “Ganymede” for the 2008 release and “Io” for the 2009 release.

*blinks*

I thought part of the fun was allowing the Eclipse community to choose a name they would like (as long as its appropriate, otherwise you can come up with stupid names like Warty Warthog ;p)

Do people like Ganymede or Io? I understand we have the Jupiter moon theme going here at Eclipse, but you know, there are other cool Jupiter moons like Elara or S/2003 J12 that need some love too.

Ganymede is a terrible terrible name.

I am not sure why we are sticking with the Jupiter moons anyway. We had a good run with Callisto and Europa, but the rest of the Jupiter moons have either awful or hard-to-pronounce names.

Let’s move over to the planets of the solar system. They all have cool names and then we would be set for the next few years — until we hit Uranus 🙂

We’ll be able to release one more product, ’cause there is Neptune after Uranus. 😉

Ganymede and Io sound like the eccentric names that Hollywood actors inflict on their children such as Apple (thank you, Gwynneth Paltrow), Shiloh (Jolie-Pitt) and Suri (Cruise).

Jupiter has 63 moons. Does this mean that, after Europa, we will be sentenced to 61 releases with bad names?

Well, Bjorn picked Callisto. He also picked Europa which people made a big fuss over since it means Europe in many languages. This is just something where you can’t make everyone in the community happy and getting a majority vote is impossible.

To be honest, I found all this fuss draining emotionally and I’d rather be spending time on CDT features than worry about the name of the release ;).

As someone who will have to type Ganymede several thousand times, I object strongly. Imagine “Eclipse Ganymede” on the splash screen. Not pretty. Although we do like to broaden the eclipse community, Ganymede makes it sound literally contagious. Back to the drawing board please.

Bjorn was not particularly thrilled with a name he couldn’t spell nor pronounce, but that just made it an even more popular choice for the rest of the planning group. 😉 I suspect that there will be a vote like last time, but it’s really not hard to pronounce nor to spell, and has kind of a nice ring, so I suspect it will grow on people…

    Why this Jupiter infatuation anyway?
What’s wrong with the good ol’ Earth Moon… after all, this is our celestial friend that brings up eclipses…
And think of the possible marketing slogan opportunities:
    – “Moon: bringing you regular Sun relief since 4 billion BC”
    – “Every once in a blue Moon, a release as good as this comes out: Eclipse Moon!”
    – “So you like tides? Then you’ll love Eclipse Moon”

And for future releases, simply mine the popular tourist locations on moon, so 4.0 would be”Eclipse – Sea of Tranquility”, Eclipse 4.1 could be “Eclipse Cheddar” (Moon == Cheese, as we all know),… and after that we could get really out there… Eclipse 5.0 “Eclipse Lunatic”, Eclipse X “Eclipse Moonlightning” (release party featuring Cybil Sheppard and Bruce Willis)…

    OK… I’ll stop now…

For me, the simple solution would for the foundation to pick 3 good names it would like to be the next release, then let there be a community vote.

All parties are satisfied then imho.

I am not too concerned about the name.

Give me a decent WTP and a decent profiler and take away my pancreas.

Moon shoon, what about greek mythology.

Greek Mythology. A Trojan boy of great beauty whom Zeus carried away to be his lover and to be cupbearer to the gods.

I hope Perverted Justice doesn’t go after the release.
