Europa Coming Along

This morning I had to setup an Eclipse installation to demo Europa for some new interns and I was elated to see that some of the projects are using the updated welcome framework feature.

I wasn’t too excited to see nothing from DTP, WTP, EMF, GEF :/

I think for next year’s release train, we should shoot to make it a requirement for people to add welcome content to help with initial usability.

I like this Welcome feature too, and just added a bunch of content into it for our Europa release of the CollabNet Desktop. http://eclipse.open.collab.net/

That being said, if every plugin, including some of the lower level ones you mentioned, use the feature I wonder if that will hurt the usability of the feature?

How well will it scale to having 20-30 entries?

That’s another problem to worry about right, one solution leads to another problem?

However, how often would people go to Europa and download everything? I don’t think that’s the common usecase. I think people go to Europa and get what they need.

Also, something is better than nothing, right :)?

I’m not a typical user, but I installed everything and it is overwhelming. I think my blog entry “When seamless integration becomes a nightmare…” is more relevant than ever….

Eclipse makes it very hard to create a mental model of all the plug-ins and features.

The welcome page is a good starting point. But eclipse needs something like a Mylyn for the UI: a way to focus on a particular task and hide or deemphasise irrelevant UI elements….
