Dirty Du Trail Half Marathon 2009

Yesterday, I participated in the inaugural Dirty Du Half Marathon out in Smithville, Texas. Its been raining the past couple days so the morning started out wet and cloudy. The drive to Smithville is only about an hour from downtown Austin. Upon arrival, I noticed the course was going to be pretty muddy given the condition of the start line field.

Dirty Du Half Marathon Start

The race organizers cautioned us that the course may be a bit muddy due to the weather with some potential deep streams to cross. I expected a muddy course with some streams to jump. What I didn’t expect was 13.1 miles of muddy trail perfection. I ended up sloshing through 24 inch deep streams, loose mud and slippery hills.

Dirty Du Half Marathon

The race was never boring and I came out the other end covered in mud. In fact this was the most enjoyable trail race I’ve ever run due to the great course and mix of perfect muddy conditions. I managed to finish the race 4th overall (3rd in my gender group) with a time of 1:51ish. My prize?

A New Belgium beer glass and box of delicious mountain mix Cliff Mojo bars.

I feel sorry for the mountain bikers who had to wade through that course this morning. It’s interesting to note Lance Armstrong holds the mountain bike course record with an impressive time of 1:36:05! I don’t think that record will be broken this morning given the dirty conditions. In the end, I want to thank the race organizers for putting on a great event. I hope that the trail half marathon shows up on the agenda again next year and that more people show up. Don’t let a little rain scare you from good time.

Movember – Day 20

I am on day 20 of growing a moustache for Movember. I have decided to go against my stylist’s best wishes and help raise money for prostate cancer research with my fellow Eclipse committers. We have raised over $2300 dollars so far! This week’s update includes a new splash screen for Eclipse (thank you Ian Bull).

As for my ‘stache, here it is on day 20.

Rock n’ Roll San Antonio Half Marathon 2009

Yesterday, I had the pleasure to participate in the Rock n’ Roll San Antonio Half Marathon. It was a foggy morning and more than 20,000 runners showed up! Since I like to play with numbers occasionally, an interesting thing to note is that of the runners that participated, roughly 70% were women. Is that a trend that I missed somewhere? I thought there would be a more even split.

I enjoyed running the half marathon given that there was music about every mile. I didn’t get a PR but I’ll settle for my 1:35:52 time. As an ode to my computer science background, I managed to finish 256th overall. Here are my stats for the day:

Chip Time: 1:35:52
Overall Place: 256 / 20021
Gender Place: 217 / 7436
Division Place: 32 / 971
Pace: 7:19
5K: 21:31
10K: 43:21
15K: 1:07:02

The post race festivities were a bit ridiculous given the 20,000+ people surrounding the Alamodome.

I wonder if it makes sense to put a limit on how many people can attend an event.

Born to Run Author in Austin

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to hear Chris McDougall speak about his book, Born to Run at Rogue Running.

Born to Run

If you’re into running or thinking about starting to run, I highly recommend giving the book a read. The attitude of the Tarahumara people are interesting… they enjoy running and they don’t have cushy shoes like most people where. I mean, how can you resist this introduction…

In the hills of Mexico, a tribe of Indians carries an ancient secret: a diet and fitness regimen that has allowed them to outrun death and disease. We set out to discover how the rest of us can catch up…

While you’re reading, go pickup a pair of Vibram Five Fingers.

Movember – Day 10

As some of you may know, I am growing a moustache for Movember. I have decided to put down my razor for one month and help raise money for prostate cancer research with my fellow Eclipse committers.

Last week, I held an election on the type of moustache I should grow because I’m a fan of elections and letting my readers have some fun with my life. The results of the election were close with the “porn star” style moustache garnering over 30% of the votes. The runner up was the “trucker” style but thankfully I didn’t have to go through that ordeal.

As for moustache progress, as of day 10, I’m building a solid base towards the “porn star” moustache:

The next update will happen on Day 20, stay tuned!

Run for the Water 2009

This morning, I participated in the Run for the Water 10 miler. I’m a fan of any race that has copious amounts of coffee available before I even get to the start line.

run4w1

It was a bit foggy this morning, but it didn’t discourage the Austin running community from coming out and cramming into position at the start line. As a bonus to the American national anthem… we were presented with a rendition of the Burundi national anthem which was a nice touch.

run4w2

I struggled up the hills and managed to finish in 1:09:47 which put me 10th in my age group. I’m not completely happy with my finish, I expected to at least run sub 7 miles, but hey, practice makes perfect. The course was difficult for your usual Austin race and I commend the organizers for making it challenging. You know, given that we were running down Pecos St and Scenic Dr, the organizers might as well offered an extension that went up Mount Bonnell given the amount of hills we ran.

run4w3

On the whole, it was a great and challenging race. It also proved to me that I need to start doing more hill work. Next up is the very flat Rock n’ Roll San Antonio race.

I’m growing a ‘stache

To the dismay of my stylist, I’m growing a ‘stache for Movember.

big stache

Apache may have their 10th anniversary, but Eclipse committers are growing ‘staches for prostate cancer awareness this month.

Since I’ve been involved with open source for quite awhile, I’m used to doing things in a transparent fashion. I decided to create a poll for the type of moustache I should grow, seeking community input.

moustache

I’m currently favoring the “major” … in the end, I hope I an rock a moustache like Orlando Bloom or Johnny Depp. So please, vote for my ‘stache and I’ll announce the results this Friday. While you’re voting, please take time to donate if you have the resources.

Stuttgart, Gersfeld and Rhön

Last week, I was in Germany for Eclipse Summit Europe 2009.

While, not at the conference, I had time to be a tourist. The first stop was at the Porsche Museum.

porsche1

The only sad thing about the Porsche Museum was that it’s closed on Mondays!

However, the dealership across the street was open and was just as good as a museum in my opinion.

The next stop on the tourism tour was Gersfeld. I hiked the Gersfeld area with friends and enjoyed the peaceful feeling of the trails.

Gersfeld

It was freezing for a Texan, but the trails were enjoyable to hike through (there were even some signs in English).

Gersfeld

What to do after all that hiking? Eat currywurst of course!

The final place I saw was Wasserkuppe, which if you are into gliders is awesome I highly recommend visiting it.

A big thank you to Ralph and Susan for being my courteous hosts.

On the Road Again…

I’m off to Germany today from Austin for Eclipse Summit Europe 2009.

The first order of business is to eat the ceremonial last breakfast taco I’ll have for a week.

Austin Torchy's Breakfast Taco

I started using TripIt.com recently to manage my travels. I highly recommend it to anyone who travels quite a bit and needs to share itineraries with family or colleagues. It also allows you to see if you have any friends that will be in the area at the same time you are (hi Boris!).

TripIt

On top of that, it even turns traveling into a game!

TripIT

I’m a bit disappointed that I’m in second place… I think I can fix that with a planned vacation to Fiji.

Finally, TripIt has an iPhone application so you can check your trips on your phone.

So give TripIt a try if you travel quite a bit.

Ok, time to go. I hope to see everyone in Ludwigsburg.

LIVESTRONG Challenge 5K 2009

Today, I participated in the LIVESTRONG Challenge 5K.

It was a beautiful Austin morning with the temperature floating around 60 degrees.

LIVESTRONG Challenge 1

The start line was packed with roughly 3500 supporters and runners.

LIVESTRONG Challenge 5K Start Line

I ran the 5K in 18:02 which seemed like an awesome time but the course shorter than expected. It turned out the course was about 2.8 miles which is a tad short of a full 5K distance. Oh well, PRs for everyone!

In the end, it was great to see the city of Austin come together and support cancer research and cancer survivors. One can only hope that science and humanity’s persistence will prevail in the end.

For an obligatory Lance Armstrong quote to go along with the picture above…

If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or fight like hell.
