One Week until #MesosCon 2014 (and LinuxCon)

Over the last couple of years I’ve been heavily involved in open source infrastructure technology by way of the Mesos project, which my team and Twitter have helped grow outside its humble beginnings as an academic project. As a result, I’m really looking forward to the first #MesosCon next week (co-located with LinuxCon) which my team at Twitter helped put together in collaboration with the awesome Mesos community and the great folks at the Linux Foundation. It was interesting as we put together the conference in a fairly transparent fashion, but that’s a topic for another blog post.

The schedule looks great and covers a wide variety of infrastructure usage:

The final day we also have a Hackathon where committers and Mesos community members will be available to drive the project forward based on community interest (basically who shows up).

Also, right before #MesosCon there will be a Docker Meetup in Chicago which will have a talk about running Docker containers on Mesos.

Look forward to seeing everyone in Chicago, feel free to reach out to me if you would like to meet up and chat open source over a frosty beverage.

Interview with @OpensourceWay

I’m a bit behind on blogging but last week I gave an interview with opensource.com about how we scale our infrastructure at Twitter using Mesos, check it out:

Hope you learned something new!

#oscon 5K 2014

I’m getting in the habit of posting more of my race results so it guilts me into running faster in the future. Last week I had the opportunity to be at OSCON for work and ran in the wonderful 5K they put on:

I finished third in my age group and 6th overall with a 6:35/mi clip!

#CaptnKarls 2014: Muleshoe Bend

Yesterday I had the opportunity to run the second race in the Capt’n Karls trail series. It was beautiful a night:

There were two 15km loops and I had some trouble logging the first half of the race, however, I finished in around 1:28 for the first time and had a pretty hard fall that scratched up my phone. For the second loop, Strava started to behave and I was able to record my progress:

Suffice to say the second loop was a lot more painful for me. I finished a bit over three hours which is OK but I was really shooting for a negative split to get me under 3 hours for the race.

#CaptnKarls 2014: Pedernales Falls State Park

Last Saturday evening, I had fun running the Captain Karls Pedernales Falls trail race, the first in the series for 2014. It was fairly hot and hillier than I expected:

However, it was absolutely beautiful chasing the sunset into the late evening:

I decided to do the 30k and finished the race in 2:56:

It was a crazy finish because I managed to chase down someone about a kilometer from the finish line and then he tried to catch me at the end so it was a full sprint the last 400 meters or so to the finish line. Not the way I wanted to end the race but I recall being 7th overall in the group so that’s not too bad!

Mesos at Texas Linux Fest 2014 (#TXLF)

At Twitter I have the fun job of running our open source office and I recently had the opportunity to present about one of our infrastructure projects (Mesos):

Thank you to the organizers at the Texas Linux Fest for hosting a great event and I look forward to it growing more next year.

Trail Race: XTERRA 16k Muleshoe Bend 2014

Yesterday I had the opportunity to take part in the XTERRA 16k in beautiful Muleshoe Bend. Besides waking up at 6am during the weekend, it was a great race and I didn’t have any issues running the course or slipping on a cactus.

I could have definitely ran the course a bit faster given that I placed 4th in my age group, but I wanted to enjoy the scenery:

I ended up running the 16k in 1:23:16 which is about an 8:22 mile.

Next up? Capt’n Karl’s night time trail series 🙂

Texas Independence Relay (#TIR2014)

Last weekend, I had an amazing time running the Texas Independence Relay 2014 edition with a bunch of old and new friends.

This was an amazing race to do before I start tapering for the Boston Marathon which is going to happen in a few weeks. On top of that, the weather was nearly perfect, during the day bluebonnets were in full bloom like I haven’t seen in many years.

During the evening, we witnessed a beautiful Texas sunset:

So how did I end up doing? I ended up running 4.5 legs (we had an injury so I ran half of an extra leg):

Overall, I had a blast and was impressed I was able to keep my average pace under 7:00/mi for the whole race, this puts me in great shape for the Boston Marathon. We actually ended up finishing 2 hours ahead of schedule roughly which put us finishing 8th at the San Jacinto Monument.

As a reminder, I’m still fundraising for the The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society so if you have the means, please consider a donation for this great cause. I promise to live tweet everyone thanks during the marathon as a token of appreciation.

Eclipse Luna+1 Name: Mars

After some legal issues with the initial name, the name of the Luna+1 release will be called Mars.

eclipsemars

Mars is a fine name and also great planet. Thank you to everyone who voted and participated in the process. We at the Eclipse Planning Council appreciate your patience.

#RunAustin Half Marathon 2014

I’ve been so busy lately that I’ve been neglecting my blogging about running. Last week, I had the opportunity to run the Austin Half Marathon during an extra humid morning.

My splits were:

  • 5K: 24:00
  • 5m: 38:42
  • 10M: 1:15:43
  • 21K: 1:39:32

Overall, I felt pretty good minus the humidity causing me to be soaked.

I’m confident that I’ll be able to finish the Boston Marathon in a couple of months, just not sure how fast I want to do it yet given my level of training currently.

For those who aren’t aware, I’m fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society so if you have the means, please consider donating. I promise to live tweet the full marathon!
