FYI Eclipse committers, the Galileo IP deadline is January 31st. If you have any third party libraries or contributions that need to be reviewed, get them in now! Otherwise, you’ll risk falling off the Galileo train.

Vista goes EPL
By Chris Aniszczyk
Ok, I couldn’t resist the headline, sometimes it’s too easy. VistA, the public record EHR and hospital management software created by the Veterans Administration, is switching to the Eclipse Public License (EPL). This is significant as it strengthens the EPL as a wise license to choose if you intend to be friendly to commercial entities and grow the open-source community with smart copyleft provisions.
This now marks two large organizations that I know that are using the EPL outside the Eclipse.org community (the other is the Symbian Foundation). Who’s next?
PDT 2.0 is available!
By Chris Aniszczyk
For those who have to hack PHP occasionally, PDT 2.0 was released today. There’s a world of a difference between 1.0 and 2.0, so I recommend you give it a spin.
It’s good to have access to ‘Open Type’ now in PHP development π
PDT 2.1 should be released in time for Galileo so try 2.0 out and give any feedback to the PDT team if you want to see new features by the time Galileo ships.
Getting on the Galileo Train
By Chris Aniszczyk
A special reminder to Eclipse projects, you have until December 12th to state your intent to get on the Galileo Simultaneous Release train. To communicate your intent, simply state it on this bug and follow the directions.
Also, it’s exciting to see some new faces on the train…
- Memory Analyzer (MAT)
- Swordfish
- Riena
- Java Workflow Tooling (JWT)
- Mobile Tools for Java (MTJ)
- XText
If you don’t see a project on the release train list and you would like to see them there, how about sending the project a friendly email stating your support for them joining the train. You know, kind of like me wanting to see PHP Development Tools (PDT) there… it just takes a note to voice your support and you can wish for it to happen π
Equinox and Foundation 1.1
By Chris Aniszczyk
For those that are curious, Equinox is planning a move to Foundation 1.1 in the 3.5 timeframe… if you have any problems with this, speak now or forever hold your peace π
For those who don’t like all this talk about tiny execution environments, check out BJ Hargrave’s EclipseCon submission about OSGi Framework 2.0… J2SE-1.5 at the framework level… sounds fun!
Attack of the witty EclipseCon submissions
By Chris Aniszczyk
Today, I’ve been doing some triage on EclipseCon submissions. It’s amazing to see the amount OSGi is mentioned everywhere compared to last year and the year before. I guess everyone wants to come to the OSGi party now π
Also, I’ve noticed that people are becoming wittier this year with their EclipseCon submission titles. Here is a sampling of what I’ve seen this year so far:
- Max and John’s Excellent Plug-in Adventure
- Sleeping Around: Writing tools that work in Eclipse, Visual Studio, Ruby, and the Web
- UML? E/R? Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off!
- The Unbearable Stupidity of Modeling
- The Whole EMF Enchilada – Building A Real-life Modeling Application
- Space Bundles! Sending Equinox to Near Space
Have you found any good ones :)? Are you now going to change your submission title to be more wittier?
Donate and become a friend of Eclipse
By Chris Aniszczyk
My ‘Friend of Eclipse‘ membership recently expired:
I quickly renewed so I can continue to support the Eclipse community and get those cool ribbons at Eclipse conferences like Eclipse Summit Europe:
So why don’t you consider donating and become a friend of Eclipse too?
EclipseCon Submission Deadline
By Chris Aniszczyk
Do you know how I can tell that the EclipseCon submission deadline is looming every year? I just need to look at my inbox:
Ah, nothing better to cheer your morning up than seeing a rush of submissions trying to beat the deadline today. So here is your reminder, please submit something!
On top of that, Boris Bokoswki and I are looking for good talks in the UI category so please submit all UI related things there! I also have the honor of chairing the prestigious “Other” category so if you have something quirky that doesn’t fit anywhere, I’m sure we can find room for you in the “Other” category.
Ludwigsburg Eclipse DemoCamp
By Chris Aniszczyk
I had the pleasure of attending the Ludwigsburg DemoCamp last night graciously hosted by WeigleWilczek (thank you JΓΒΆrn).
Ed Merks, Ian Skerret and I had the pleasure of hearing talks from:
- Heiko Seeberger, The Power of OSGi
- Frank Gerhardt, Dynamische Server mit Eclipse Equinox
- Markus Kopf, Jazz and fancy stuff
I think Frank did a really good job in explaining the power of OSGi via a simple MOTD web services demo. I tend to find that when people first come across OSGi, they don’t understand the power that dynamic updates can bring to your applications. When you see it happening live with a demo of bundles coming, going and being updated… you sit back and say… ya… that’s cool! I think we need to have more simple examples like the one Frank showed to help lower the learning barrier with OSGi.
To end the democamp, there was a vodka tasting:
I think after a few too many vodka tastings… I was trying to argue that vodka was invented in Poland, not Russia. I don’t remember how it came up, but things like that do sometimes π
In the end, I had a great time in Germany (like always). I’m grateful to our kind German hosts for putting up such great events like Eclipse Summit Europe and the democamp. Thank you and I hope to see everyone next year!
